"Health is a large word. It embraces not the body only, but the mind and spirit as well;...
and not today's pain or pleasure alone, but the whole being and outlook of a man."

Food Allergies and Food Intolerances

What is the difference between food allergies and food intolerances?

Food allergies and food intolerances are two different conditions with different causes and symptoms.

What Is A Food Allergy?

An allergy is usually immediate and can be life threatening. It involves an over-reaction of the immune system, your body's natural defence system to a food or substance. True allergy occurs when your body responds as though it's under attack, releasing Type I IgE antibodies to combat the allergen.  Often the allergen is essentially harmless, it is the bodies reaction to it that makes them so dangerous to the individual with the allergy. We are able to look for and measure these antibodies in a specific test (IgE allergy test).

Allergic reactions are often triggered by food like peanuts, shellfish, egg and milk, and inhaled allergens such as dust, pollen and pet dander.

Allergy symptoms typically appear within minutes to two hours after you have been exposed to the allergen.

What Is A Food Intolerance?

Food intolerances are characterised by delayed-onset symptoms and the presence of Type III IgG antibodies in the blood. It is called delayed onset because the reactions to an intolerance can occur anything between 8 and 72 hours after consumption of the offending food or additive.  This is one of the reasons why a test is often the most accurate, food elimination diets can be less effective in determining intolerances.

The test tells you which foods to you are sensitive or intolerant too and then you can work at excluding them from your diet, with the help of your nutritionist.

If you would like to get tested, I use this lab.  Please advise them you are a client of mine when you book with them and they will give you a discount.  (I get no kick back from using their services, rather than a referral fee I asked that they give you a discount and I use them because I trust them.)  Ask them to send me a copy of your results and I can help you to manage them.
