"Health is a large word. It embraces not the body only, but the mind and spirit as well;...
and not today's pain or pleasure alone, but the whole being and outlook of a man."

Health Pioneers: A wonderful little find

Lisa Vance - Monday, January 03, 2011
I stumbled upon a GREAT little second hand bookshop in Maleny on my days off.  It was really quite exciting I couldn't leave before I had bought 8 books!

The reason I was so delighted is the amazing encouragement I felt when I discovered classics like: "Please Doctor, I'd Rather Do It Myself... with Vitamins and Minerals", written by pioneer LaDean Griffin. The book was published in 1979! It has the most gorgeous old cover with an illustration of a balding man, with little round John Lennon glasses, adorned in a white doctors coat fastened to under his chin. He is holding a test tube, and in it is a little lady with her arms outstretched appealing to him.  It is quite hilarious really.  The contents of the book are based on daily doses of vitamins and minerals needed to improve your health including how foods affect nutrients and food sources of nutrients.  The author promises that:

"...When you get through this book, you will be excited about vitamins and minerals and you will be confident in feeling you now know how to be healthier and happier without the doctor and drugs.  You will discover more Vim, Vigor, and Vitality from vitamins and minerals."

Amongst my loot are Fit for Life (Harvey and Marilyn Diamonds sensation that took the world by storm in 1945), The Food Pharmacy (1988 by International bestselling author Jean Carper) and a very exciting find: A Weight off your Mind.  This last one was probably my favourite.  I am writing a book on eating behaviour and the mind body connection.  This text was published in 1991, twenty years ago and really is a leader in not only its time but still today.  It is written by a psychologist, Hilary Tupling and is described as a guide to changing your eating patterns by understanding why you eat what you eat.  Exactly my specialty, so very exciting to find someone who has researched the subject a couple of decades ago!  Much of this is still very new and misunderstood so I always welcome any information I can find on the subject.

We have had access to so many answers for so long, it feels criminal what the world knows about natural and preventative and proactive healthcare, and yet disease and obesity and so much discomfort and pain are still such a feature of modern day life. Natural health has remained such a well kept secret.

That's why I love it when I discover those who "let the cat out of the bag" quietly and determinedly.

I will make sure I keep blogging for you on all the interesting bits :)  Paging through although some of the stuff is outdated and certainly there are more recent and up to date texts out there... but it is wonderful to observe the trends and peruse over the paths these pioneers have walked.

HAPPY NEW YEAR... or shall we say HEALTHY NEW YEAR to you!
